The highlight of the varsity golf season was winning the I.A.C. Golf Tournament Championships by 15 strokes over Georgetown Prep. Evan Katz was medalist shooting a one under par 71 on a rainy, windy, cold day at Worthington Manor golf course.  Injured and with no practice in a month, John Kalavritinos willed his way around the course to finished runner-up with a 74.  On that day, Five Landon golfers made the All-I.A.C. golf team of ten, Evan Katz, John Kalavritinos, Jeff Samit, West Shaw and Cole Gibson. The varsity golf team finished the season with a share of the I.A.C Championship and second place in the Washington Metropolitan Championships. Landon had two heartbreaking loses during the regular season losing by one stroke to Prep and Gonzaga, on both occasions 2016 All-Met John Kalavritinos could not play because of injuries. Evan Katz tied the school record with a 72.8 season scoring average, he had 9 rounds of golf of par or better, an amazing feat. Evan Katz was selected 1st Team All-Met for the second year in a row. He also made the Rolex Junior All-American team. My Captains Evan, Jeff, and John are amazing golfers, team captains and human beings. The three have set 7 new individual and team records over their 4 years as starters. They have won four I.A.C. titles and two Washington Metropolitan Championships. The end of the year awards are: Most Improved Jack Jarrett, Special Efforts Award John Kalavritinos, Coaches Award Jeff Samit, Most Valuable Award Evan Katz.

quote from Christian Swezey– Editor WaPo Sports, freelance at @Inside_Lacrosse.one of the best, most insightful HS or college lacrosse analysts:

What impressed me most about this year’s Landon team was the “buy-in” from the players and coaches. It was obvious pretty early on, just from talking to a few players and coaches and watching several games, that this team was willing to sacrifice to achieve its goals. I also really liked when, during warmups for the GP game, the student managers synched the team’s entrance to the stadium with the song “Sweet Emotion” from Aerosmith. The GP team was in a huddle and I noticed that several of the players looked over when the music started and Landon took the field. Advantage Bears

George Boiardi

The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced that former Big Red men’s lacrosse player Mario St. George Boiardi (L’00 C’04). is the 2017 Spirit of Tewaaraton recipient at the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony,
After earning 11 varsity letters at Landon School, Boiardi went on to become Cornell’s 2001 Rookie of the Year and a four-year starter for the Big Red. A captain of the 2004 team, Boiardi tragically lost his life on March 17, 2004 when he was struck in the chest with a ball during a game on Cornell’s Schoellkopf Field. As an accomplished student, athlete and campus leader who was committed to helping those less fortunate, he lived by the motto that “well done is better than well said.” Boiardi planned to serve with Teach for America on South Dakota’s Rosebud Reservation following his graduation, and his legacy lives on through the annual 21 Run, which benefits local literacy efforts in Ithaca, a cause dear to Boiardi’s heart.
