Landon Lacrosse 10 Gonzaga 8

The gauntlet continues and this weekend featured two  G teams gunning for Bears. On Friday, Landon’s lacrosse rival, Georgetown Prep and then two days later, WaPo’s #5 Gonzaga,

  • a team on a roll (undefeated in their last six games and 9 out of their last 10) a
  • according to LaxPower.com, the Purple Eagles (12-6) have

o   12 seniors off to college lacrosse next year,

o   4 juniors

∗including a 6’4” A with 75 points and Recruiting Rundown #3

⇒  oh by the way the Bears will play RR’s #1 on Tuesday

and

               º3 sophomores.

The temperature at game time was the high 80s with matching humidity. The artificial turf reflected the heat to a difficult level.

This was a match between two closely matched rosters and both benefitting from excellent coaching. As one of the coaches noted in the post-game debriefing, the Landon team’s victory was attributable to their adherence to discipline—no bad passes; excellent positioning on both ends of the field; superb, timely sliding; intelligent shots; few wasted possessions—ALL IN THE DEBILITATING HEAT WHICH USUALLY CAN CAUSE MENTAL ERRORS, AND AGAINST A TEAM WHICH MAKES FEW MISTAKES.

An inspiring pregame talk by a guest Ranger energized the Bears. Justin Shockey (13/17, 5 GBs), surprise, won the 1st F/O and moved the ball to the visitors’ offense. A series of passes ended with Joey Epstein in possession. His dodge ditched the Purple Eagle D and the Bear A shot one-handed to score @ 8:10.

surprise,Justin won at the dot, passed to Joey E and he blasted a shot into the corner of the 6’ x6’ @  8:04 (YES, elapsed time of 0:06). Joey E completed his 1st Q hat trick 4:43.

The home team responded with two goals in the last 3 minutes of the period. The last tally was registered during a home team EMO (one of 6 man-ups for the Purple Eagles; 0 for the Bears).

Fifteen seconds after the Gonzaga goal, Justin, after winning the F/O, ran into the Gonzaga D zone and scored @1;46

END OF 1ST Q BEARS 4 PURPLE EAGLES 2

With the aid of another advantage, the home team narrowed the margin at 11:42.

Landon responded with a three-goal run. Zach Johnson, on a nice wing play, moved the ball to John Geppert who beat the Gonzaga Goalie @ 5:30. That was followed by another brilliant shot into the opponents’ nets by Joey E @ 4:46. Zach completed a one-man-clear and charged into the Gonzaga O zone to blast Bear goal #7 @3:34.

The home team started a 3 goal run of its own—goals at 2:25 and 0:04—the troika was completed in the 3rd Q.

After 24 minutes in which 13 goals were recorded, the next half was a demonstration of the teams’ defensive skills. The Brown jerseyed defenders caused turnovers, won ground balls and cleared efficiently. Let by Cam Jones, Andrew Fowler, Drew Wellington, Mo Sillah (D, LSM, SSDM), Doug Chirite and Will Amoroso, the high-scoring Purple Eagle had neither Gs nor As. The effort was strongly aided the 2 way middies (Zach, Ryan Pride, Will Oliver, Jace Menendez, T Halm). Especially during the last periods, Shane Corcoran made several critical saves—any one of which could have turned the momentum in the home team’s favor. AN EXTRAORDINARY TEAM DEFENSIVE EFFORT (Gonzaga was averaging 10 goals over its season).

Joey E added a +1 to the Bears’ margin with a goal @10:50. The visitors advantage crew again @ 10:44.

The Purple Eagles restored the differential with two consecutive goals—at 8:28 and at 6:15.

END OF 3RD Q BEARS 9 EAGLES 8

This last 12:00 segment was a defensive battle. As previously mentioned, the Landon played smart as a unit- recognizing and responding to threats, being aware of the Eagle tendencies, having the 7 Bears move as one to frustrate their opponents, causing critical turn-overs and battling for the loose ball. The home team played equally well.

The final score of the game was a classical Nate Buller dodge resulting in the Bears’ 10th goal @ 3:00
