Landon lacrosse 15 St. Mary’s Annapolis 7

Averaging 10+ goals per game, the 2015 MIAA champions, led by a stud goalie (recruit for #3 PSU) arrived ready for the annual test between the MIAA-A and IAC conferences. The game was a déjà vu of the last visit of the Annapolis to Bethesda. Coach Bordley was able to give playing time to almost every Bear on the active roster. The home team left the field having more than met the SMS challenge. Onto Friday and the Bears of Brunswick.

As with all 2017 games so far, the opponents scored first with a tally at 6:49.

Nate Buller scored his first of 6 goals with a nice sweep, separating form his D and freeing his hands @ 5:11. The home team beat the SMS goalie again by Will Oliver flying past the Saint midfielder, drawing a slide and then passing to Nate, who got his 2nd goal @ 4:21.

The Coach Healy offense (if you haven’t watched his instructive Hudl videos, you should; see your son) clicked again @3:25; this time the sweep freed John Geppert’s hands and he beat the visiting netminder for Bears’ goal # 3.  John’s shot was taken from almost exactly the same place as Griffin Brown (now at the ‘Gate) scored 6 goals against his grandfather’s alma mater in 2015.

The attack continued with FOGO Island (a/k/a Justin Shockey) dominance (17 of 19 for the game) who earned a hockey assist followed by a quick pass to Joey Epstein who found Nate and the result was another goal @5:28. To put a period on the period, Joey smoked his long pole and came to the crease to deposit goal #5 @ 2:58

END OF 1ST PERIOD BEARS 5 SAINTS 1

SMS Coach Lily fired up his Saints and They scored again at 8:17.

The Nate to Joey combination accounted for the next Bear goal @7:40.

Leo Maldonado showed some moves in the midfield and scored @0:47.2.

HALFTIME BEARS 7 SAINTS 2

The 3rd period began with 3 successive goals, all preceded by Justin’s F/O dominance. The 1st moved to Joey who beat the visitor goalie @ 11:19 (0:41 expired). Virtually the same transition from the midfield X resulted in Bear goal #9 by Landon’s #8 only 0:19 later (@11:00).

The next battle at FOGO island resulted in Justin possessing the ball again, sprinting the SMS nets and shooting the ball into the back of the Saints net @10:52.

The tenacious visitors responded with three consecutive scores (at 10:36, 4:03 and 3:02).

The home Bears replied with 3 tallies in the last two minutes of the 3rd period. A pass from Nate to Joey, who backhanded a shot as he fell to the ground @1:29. Nate beat the SMS goalie next for Bears’ goal #12. An EMO opportunity saw Zach pass the ball to John who fired from the Griffin Brown 6G spot for a goal @1:13.

END OF 3rd PERIOD BEARS 13 SAINTS 5

The last period was an opportunity for the Bears’ extended roster to get some experience. The Saints got two goals (at 4:41 EMO and at 4:22), but Miles Tonkel showed his distribution talents feeding T Halm for goal @3:36 (EMO) and then to Leo Maldonado 2:36.

FINAL SCORE BEARS 15 SAINTS 7

EXPLANATION OF THE KHARI BATEN “THAT’S A BEAR AWARD

One of the parents asked me to repeat the origin and the purpose of the KB award. The selection of an individual for the KB award is meant to identify someone whose team play (not necessarily individual statistics) reflect the level of effort which Khari exhibited in his careers at Landon, at Williams and as a coach at several schools in Philadelphia, PA.  Khari was a member of the Landon class of 1990 , during his Bear career he was a major contributor to the football and lacrosse teams. He went to Williams College, studied history and was a fouryear member of the Ephmen Football team. Upon graduation, Khari joined the Landon faculty where he was a respected member of the football and lacrosse coach staffs from 1994 to 1996.
