Bears Hockey 3 Bulldogs 1

The IAC top-seeded and WaPo #6 team, led by the 2016 WaPo POY goalie came to Ft. DuPont with expectations of winning their first league tournament. On February 14, it must have been a St. Valentine Massacre as many StA hearts were broken. Landon “blue” the home team out of the rink with a convincing 3-1 win!!!

The Landon 4 lines and 3 D pairs played smart, aggressive hockey for the entire 45 minutes of this game; in particular, forechecking forced the play at the StA end. Although the visitors controlled the puck for most of the 1st trimester (10 SOGs v. 5), the two goalies denied all shots.

At 0:39 expired of the 2nd stanza, the home team got on the scoreboard. Ty Morton stopped two point blank shots, but the 3rd found a small space next to the pipe. That was the Bulldogs last score.

The Bears responded with a nice goal @ 10:51—a pass by Ryan Giles connected with Chase Blazer who shot towards the far side of the goal and as the puck approached the crease, Will Jarrett put his stick on it, redirecting its path past the StA goalie.

Soon thereafter, the Bulldogs sent a hard shot towards Ty and as its trajectory his nets, its trajectory was altered. The Bear netminder responded to the change and blocked it. The save maintained the visitors’ momentum.

At about 12 minutes expired in this middle period, the StA goalie defeated a Bear breakaway, keeping his team in the game.

2nd period Bears’ SOGs 15; Ty Saves 6

Landon’s senior captain set the example by scoring the Go-Ahead goal with a breakaway @ 12:14, Cole Gibson blew by the opponents and scored. From high above the Ft. DuPont ice, it was unclear where Cole scored, but his Bear Brothers chanted “5 hole, 5 hole….” indicating that the StA left a gap between his pads. It is fair to assume that the younger eyes (so many of them) saw the play correctly.

About six minutes later (@ 6:21), Will “Badger” started by intercepting a Bulldog pass and passing the puck to Chase whose quick pass to Ryan Giles who accelerated past the Bulldog D and roofed a shot (knocking the StA goalie’s water bottle into the air for goal #3.

Throughout the game, the Bear defenders—Chase, Cullen Stout, Chris Morris,  Jack Jarrett, Peter Gilbert and Ethan Weinstein – were steadfast. Playing their positions, anticipating the StA movements, blocking shots, making exceptional breakout passes and effectively using their bodies. Another key basis for victory was the use of all 4 Bear lines. They wore down their opponents; credit is due to (in numerical order; players not yet mentioned): Spencer Davis, Owen Concannon, Hayes Cusick, Joey Graham, Nico Kenary, Drew Wellington, Jake Davidson, Henry Chiperfield (i), Nicholai Khramtsov and Max Weinstein.

Coaches Farnstrom, Weiss and Anas deserve kudos for “teaching” these boys over the season. Their players earned good marks on 2/14.

A text was received from USMNT U17 #36 indicating that he was happier about beating StA than his victory over Russia.

Ty had 5 more saves for a game total of 16 and Landon had 10 in the 3rd of a total of 35 SOGs.

St. Valentine’s Day was a bad omen for SSSA which lost to GP.

IAC Championships Thursday 2/16 GP at the Bears Den @ 4pm. Bear Brother support is requested.
