From Coach Katz–

I have been trying for ten years to get some Landon wrestlers into the prestigious Beast of the East competition out of the University of Delaware.  This 24 year old tournament has been one of the toughest high school tournaments for the past several years.  A place winner at the Beast earns instant respect because of the level of difficulty of this tournament.  Schools with proven wrestling tradition all attend: Blair Academy (ranked #1 in the country), , Bergen Catholic (top New Jersey school #7 in the country), Bethlehem Catholic (top PA school #8 in the country), Malvern Prep (#9), Nazareth (#12), Elyria (#15 one of the top teams in Ohio), Brecksville (#27 ), North Allegheny (#46), and  Don Bosco Prep (#47).  Two Landon Bears represented our school very well.

  • Lorenzo Lopez (120 lbs) went 3-2 and made the top 16 in the weight class.
  • Brendon Gallagher (145 lbs) went 4-2 and lost a close match in the blood round (if you win, you place).  That put him in the top 12 of the weight class.

Both weights started with over 64 of the best wrestlers in the country.  The team (consisting of two wrestlers) placed 80th out of 110 teams.  Congratulations to both wrestlers for an outstanding performance!

Thank you to the rest of the team who attended the Angle Tree community service effort on Friday.  This Salvation Army project helps provide toys for kids for families who cannot afford presents otherwise.  I was proud of the team as they worked hard for a 4.5 hour shift.  They helped retrieve toys from the warehouse and hand deliver them directly to the families.  Not only did they get exercise running back and forth from the storage, but also they got to meet and interact with these families as they prepared for the holidays.  It was a great weekend for the wrestling team.

Thanks, Coach Katz– lots of good reasons to be proud to be a Bear!!!
