Landon Lacrosse 10 Georgetown Prep 6

The home team public address announcer used every idle moment during the game to congratulate his school for recent athletic victories over Landon in a variety of sports. Fortunately, his tendency for self-aggrandizement terminated when the Scoreboard showed 0:00 and Home 6 Visitors 10. The pleasure of hearing the Bear victory more than cured the earlier annoyance.

From 3pm to 4pm the Jesuit campus thundered with drumlines and reverberated with cheers. The Hoyas had clearly marked this game as a must win (having lost 6-5 [2o/t’s] and 14-9 in 2015). The students charged the stands (there were signs around campus stating that “attendance was mandatory”. The Orange T-shirted visitors matched their enthusiasm and filled the stands in equal measure. Before the first whistle (of which there were many), the competitors were hyped.

The home team scored first with a goal at 6:36. The Bears scored three consecutive tallies. The Landon ride caused a turnover and the result was that Joey Epstein had the ball and took a bounce shot to beat the GP goalie (who lives in Atlanta) @5:32. Justin Shockey flipped the face-off into the air and Brian Menendez made an athletic catch of the sphere and delivered it to Joey @ 5:21. The next Bear score was a power alley dodge by Zach Johnson @ 2:36.

The home Hoyas responded with goals at 2:14 and 0:51

The next twelve minutes involved a lot of up and down play with a fair number of errant passes and failed clears.

A Bear fast break ended with OMC Will Powell with the ball, his speed creating separation on an alley dodge and a shot past the Hoya goalie @ 6:08.

A penalty called against the visitors allowed the home team to score on EMO at 11:36. Thereafter the Bears led.

A dodge from behind and a shot to the far pipe by Joey = goal #5 for the Bears @7:46. The Landon offense continued to click; here John Geppert lasered a pass to Will Oliver who motored by this opponent and scored @3:27.

The Hoyas had the last goal of this quarter at 1:39

Landon’s deeper roster dominated the last twelve minutes. It started with a slick move by Joey to create space and his shot beat the GP goalie @10:27. John Geppert assisted on the 5th goal by Joey @ 6:45 on an EMO play.

Under a minute, the Prep coach tried to pressure the Bears by taking his goalie out of the crease and double team the ball. Unfortunately the two GP long-poled defenders could not keep up with Griffin Brown. He deposited the ball in a Hoya empty net @0:44 and after an Andy Whicker face-off win, Griffin B shot past a non-goalie for the 10th goal @0:31.

At 0:00 Prep scored.
