Landon Hockey 7 St. John’s College High School 3

SJCHS moved up to the AA division of MAPHL this year. Its roster has NO seniors and 18 freshmen all wearing the Patron Saint of the Cadets’ Kevin Plank’s Under Armour sweaters. St. John’s once was a military prep school; so its nickname is the Cadets. The young home team played well (look out future?), but the depleted Bears used their depth to beat the opponents 7-3.

The first period was scoreless, but the Bears outshot SJCHS 11 to 5. A lot of the play was up and down the ice, but neither team was able to finish.

The 2nd 17 minute segment started off inauspiciously with the Cadets scoring at 14:07 on a powerplay. That abrupt score brought the Bears to life. Ben Gilbert initiated a play by moving the puck towards the SJCHS goal and Cole Gibson buried it @ 13:54. Unlike the junior’s previous scores in which his excellent hands tipped a shot from the point, this time he controlled and shot the puck. The faceoff at center ice immediately went to the visitors and Ben moved the puck to Chris Morris and eventually Drennan Greene buried his 1st goal @13:24 (only ½ a minute after the tying goal).

SJCHS incurred it 1st penalty, but the L powerplay was unable to convert this opportunity. Bear goal #3 came @ 5:24 when Mike Soraci got the puck to Drennan for his second goal.

A game like this offers Coach Farnstrom an opportunity to test the depth of his roster. Throughout the game, Cullen Stout, Own Concannon, Chris Morris, Henry Chiperfield, ole Gibson, Peter Greene and Logan Giles played significant minutes against the opponents, even PK time.

Only a minute into this last stanza, Nico Kenary, Spencer Davis and Mike connected for the Bears’ 5th tally @ 15:49. Soon thereafter , Drennan completed a hat trick with assists to Spencer and Cole @ 11:53. This triplet may have some symbolic significance since Drennan, who will become a USMA Cadet this June, accomplished this scoring mark against the Cadets of DC.

Twenty seconds later (@ 11:33) Drennan passed the black rock to Chris Morris whose blast was too strong for the home goalie and the spheroid crossed the SJCHS goal line for Bears’ 6th tally.

The Cadets fought back, with the aid of two consecutive penalty calls against the Bears, and scored two PP goals at 9:04 and then 8:23. The four goal margin was restored when the slap shot of Brian Jordan was directed at and found the bottom corner of the home team’s net @4:54.
