Landon Hockey 6 DeMatha 3

The Stags and Landon have a long hockey history; however, the first BIG clash between the Bears and DM was in March 2, 1961 at Cole Field House in hoops for the DC championship, but the Stags two stars beat Fred Hetzel L’61. Since then the two schools have primarily battled in rinks and on the lax field (there was a recent soccer upset of DM on the soccer pitch). The on ice teams have frequently battled for MAPHL Championships over the past five or so years. On January 20, 2016, the contest was not as tough in the past. Even though the Bears played without several players, they won convincingly 6-3.

Landon scored first with Patrick Giles demonstrating his stick-handling skills—a strong move to the Stag goalie’s right and then a drag to the left, finishing with a backhand shot @ 13:49. The visitors responded with a PP goal at 0:49.9

The next frame was all Bears.

First, a PP goal Spencer Davis to Chase Blazer to Patrick @ 12:10 with the scoring shot from a ridiculous angle.

Fifteen seconds later Mike Soraci picked up the puck in the neutral zone and sped into the Ozone to score @ 11:55. The captain’s goal was after an inscrutable call by the referees and cancelled any momentum switch to the visitors that might have flowed from that favorable DM call.

With 5:51 remaining in the period, a brilliant pass from Mike to Patrick for the fourth Bear goal (and the 3rd consecutive home goal).

The home D asserted itself during this 17 minute segment. Jack Concannon was stellar in the nets, frustrating the Stags with athletic saves and fending off frequent visitors’ crashing of his crease. With the Bear forwards covering their defensive responsibilities, the D (senior Brian Jordan, junior Cullen Stout, soph Henry Chiperfield and frosh Chase Blazer) constantly frustrated their opponents.

(L SOG 15/21 L SAVES 9/20)

To start the last segment of play, “Hatrick Giles” tallied his 3rd goal on a breakaway. The Bears’ equivalent of Evgeny, Mike, feathered a

pass through several DM defenders and connected with Spencer Davis for Landon’s 6th goal @ 12:48.

The Bears possessed the puck for most of the remainder of the game, moving away from the Stags and frustrating their opponents’ attempts to catch up. At 3:45 the tenacious visitors scored their third goal.

Landon, minus a number of key players, lost to Mt. St. Joe’s on Monday 1/18.

Assuming that the game is not snowed out, the schedule has a game Friday at the Bears’ Den against Spaulding at 6:30.
