Bears Hockey 9 John Jay 2 in 1st round of West Chester Holiday Tournament

Knowledgeable report from Pennsylvania by Logan Giles (much better than the normal reports), thanks Logan

Every year, the Landon hockey team travels up to West Chester, PA to compete against teams that they would not usually play against during the regular season. This year teams from New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland competed in the tournament. The Bears have done very well in the tourney, advancing to the championship game in every tournament since 2010.

The Bears opened up against John Jay, a team that the Bears are all too familiar with. In 2012, the team opened up against John Jay, and lost a tight game 3-2. This year however, would be different. The first half of the period tested the strengths and weaknesses of each team. The Bears used Coach Farnstrom’s 2-3 and 3-2 forecheck. The 2-3 is when two players pressure the puck while the three remaining players wait at the blue line, thus causing the opposition to turn the puck over, leading to an easy goal. The 3-2 is two players pressuring the puck, the third guy near the faceoff circles, and the defensemen patrolling the blue line.

The bad guys opened up with a goal 11 minutes into the game. Usually the team that is down, plays tentatively and defensive minded. After smooth breakout by the Bears, Cole Gibson passed the puck to Nico Kenary, after skating through the offensive zone, Drennan Greene put the biscuit in the basket to even the score. 30 seconds later, Brian Jordan assisted to Michael Soraci on the powerplay to put the good guys up 2-1. Cole Gibson added weight to the lead by scoring with assists from Drennan Greene and Nico Kenary.

Start of the second period. On the powerplay again, Drennan Greene scored from Michael Soraci and Ben Gilbert. With the game now at 4-1, John Jay tried to intimidate the Bears by playing a physical game, but they could not get the Bears into hibernation. Later on in the period, Patrick Giles scored from Michael Soraci. Later on in the second stanza, Nico Kenary scored a bar down shot assisted by Cole Gibson. To round off the scoring by all three lines, Michael Soraci scored from Spencer Davis and Owen Concannon

To cap off a five goal period, Aditya Krishnan scored off a one timer from Michael Soraci.

Tommy Mottur replaced Jack Concannon in the third period and stopped 11 of 12 shots. Michael Soraci scored from Patrick Giles and put the puck five hole to put the Bears up 8-1.. John Jay scored one on the powerplay, but the lead was too large. Owen Concannon scored from Cole Gibson to finish off the game. Final score 9-2 Bears.

The team plays the team from Rockville Pike and then later Twin Valley tomorrow to finish off the round robin play.
