Varsity Water Polo starts season with three wins

A roster with 13 members of the Class of 2016 and with talented ‘17/’18/’19 Bear swimmers creates some expectations. The first three matches (one home, two away) may show that they may have more than potential. Wins over Gilman 13-7, Penn Charter 13-12 and Haverford 12-7 show that these Bears are real. They swam against Germantown Academy and Malvern Prep on Saturday plus are in the pool on Sunday against Mt. St. Joseph’s and McDonogh. A team to watch; anyone able to be a reporter for this team?

Varsity Football Preseason

With two scrimmages under their belt, this team seems set at most positions.

Offense: Though four seniors who had played together in the line have graduated, there appears to be the sort of coordination needed for Landon’s complex blocking schemes. Returning ’15 starters (or significant experience from last year) populate the skilled offensive players at QB, RBs (again there will be another, but new #4 at the tailback position), WRs and TEs. A couple of new names add to the O’s strengths. There appears to be good replacements available across the depth charts at all positions.

Defense: Three of the stalwarts of last year’s D will be playing college ball this fall for the Richmond Spiders (Padalino and Williams) and the Endicott Gulls (Johnson) plus several of the positions were filled with two players. Returning starters will be ready as LBs, DBs, DT and S. In the Landon tradition, as one brother goes off to college, another moves up, Kolby’s not-so-little brother may be able to fill his bro’s Golden Shoes. In the preseason, the opponents threw a number of bubble screens and the Bear perimeter defenders covered well.

Landon did not punt much during the two scrimmages; so there were not enough events to gauge that skill. Place kicking was impressive—several kick offs boomed into the end zone and the most revealing was that the same left footer split the uprights with yards to go FROM 47 YARDS out. As Mac Jacoby said, we haven’t seen such distance in an IAC PK since StA’s Nick Lowry (GOOGLE that name), but Will Snyderwine showed a strong leg here and for Duke (where he was also known for his tackles on KOs. His real sport was Rugby) .

It appears that there may be a lot of talent in the ’19 class; so the future looks bright.

It is the beginning of a new academic year at Landon; so it is appropriate to repeat an explanation of what the purpose of these words is.

EDITORIAL POLICY

It’s a little presumptuous to even pretend that this silly little “blog” merits anything called an editorial policy, but I cannot think of a more apt phrase to introduce an explanation of what BSN is trying to do. Hopefully, the below paragraph will explain to new readers what’s going on in this space; further, the “policy” makes some important admissions (maybe even a priori apologies) and makes clear how welcome your comments, criticisms, corrections and the occasional compliment(s) are welcome!!!!

(a) The content is mine, does not reflect the opinion of Landon, Coach Padalino or anyone directly related to Landon,

(b) That any errors that may exist are mine, inadvertent and correctable (please let me know and I will make ALL corrections);

(c) That the author (me) is a huge disciple of the Landon team concept and that I will do everything that I can do to mention all the players; however, universal coverage is not really possible through this medium. If someone believes that a player or group should receive greater attention, I am open to such suggestions. I will TRY not to mention referees at any time and will limit references to the opposition.

(d) That BSN is a volunteer publication and that as the editor, publisher, statistician and writer [me], I am all too fallible and I apologize in advance for any error.

(e) TO REPEAT– BSN  gladly welcomes all comments, criticisms and corrections; usually the right version is incorporated in the text. SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME ALL FORMS OF FEEDBACK (GOOD AND BAD).

IF ANY NEW BEAR FANS WOULD LIKE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE BSN LIST SERVE WHICH SENDS OUT THESE POSTS—

OR IF ANY STUDENT, PARENT,COACH, MANAGER OR FRIEND WOULD LIKE TO COVER SPORTS NOT FREQUENTLY REPORTED HERE—
