Landon Lacrosse 9 Coronado 4

The annual match with an opponent, who has almost as many Bear alumni coaches (3) as does Landon (4), did not follow the normal script. In many of the past years, the Landon starters built up a lead and then the gerbils/Baby Bears came into get some experience. The Islanders scored first, but the Bears then rang up 8 successive goals; while the Bear D shut out the visitors for more than 30 minutes. Bears 9 Islanders 4

As with most games, the teams spent much of the 1^st period assessing where the other’s strengths/weaknesses may be. The ‘Nado team scored late to take a 1-0 lead

 

END OF 1^ST Q – ISLANDERS 1 BEARS 0

 

The momentum changer was, like he was against Gonzaga, Nate Buller. He set up behind goal and drove to Goal Line Extended and got his hands free for a shot goal @11:05. ‘Nado was called for a penalty and on the EMO Colton Rupp found Nate on a cross crease pass. #8 was 2 goals for 2 shots @8:37. Then, Rob Adkins saw Nate at the opposite edge of the goal and the Sophomore tallied his 3^rd goal @ 7:19.

 

After that flurry of goals Coach put in his second string attack (not a derogatory term given the Bear starters) and they showed their talents with 3 more goals. First, Sophomore Thomas Halm got the pass from a fast breaking middie and found classmate Colin O’Brien for the goal @ 5:32. The troika was complete when Junior Drennan Greene (who played the first twelve minutes) dodged past his ‘Nado defender for a goal @ 1:57.

 

HALFTIME – BEARS 6 ISLANDERS 1

 

Some of the starters came out to begin after the intermission. While Landon had a man advantage, Griffin Brown moved the ball to Colton for a goal @ 1:31. Forty seconds later (to show the ‘Nado defender that his loose stick work did not deter him), #4 used a power dodge to score @0:51.5.

There is no quit in an Alex Cade coached team and his Islanders scored at 8:22, 0:56 and 0:05.3. In between the initial opponent scores, Koko Avedisian got the ball to Drennan who scored @6:25.

 

The experience crew who played well against this California powerhouse included (in numerical order) Paul Kern (4 saves), John Geppert, Will Amoroso, Andrew Whicker, Brian MacLaury, Doug Chirite and Griffin Valentine.

Khari Baten “That’s a Bear” Award

 

This recognition usually is for the work in a game, but this award is made for the six goals he scored in the last two games. In the critical moments of each of these games, Nate Buller bulled his way past defenders and scored. The Sophomore is not a one way player; his fierce rides and play around the goal have resulted in numerous ground balls and several checks which caused turnovers. That’s a Bear, Nate!
