Landon Hockey 5 Archbishop Spalding 1

The Archbishop Spalding Cardinals frequently cause problems for the Bears; if memory serves, they denied Landon a perfect season in 2011with a bizarre 9-9 tie. Earlier in this year’s hockey campaign, the Bear pasted the Cardinals 8-1 at their house. The Severn school was missing several players to their Club hockey commitments and the team’s recent game, a 3-0 win over Calvert Hall, suggested that they posed a bigger threat to the Bears’ progress to the MAPHL semi-finals. That trend line was broken as Landon won 5-1. Patrick Gilles netted a natural hat trick!

Though the Bears’ Den home team controlled the puck for much of the first fifteen minutes, there were no scores by either team. The Shots on Goal were even at 10-10.

The excellent positional hockey by the Bears (designed by Coaches Farnstrom and Fidler) paid dividends in the next period. Early on, Patrick Gilles was positioned properly and intercepted an SA break out pass, turned, skated a few strides and scored the 1st goal @ 14:09, assisted by Brian Jordan. Big 22’s streak continued when Jacob Ruttenberg got the puck to the Freshman, who scored his second goal @ 5:03.

After a resurfacing of the ice between periods, the Cardinals, facing the end of their season, came out with high energy, attacking Landon with more intensity. The stonewalling of the Bear D( Trevor Wolf, Alex Norwinski, Brian Jordan, Ben Gilbert and Jacob Ruttenberg), of all the Bear forwards (who skated hard to check the opponents) and of the Bear Netminder, Jack Concannon (26 saves and a shutout for 44:04.05) stifled the visitors.

The AS initial energy was diminished when Patrick scored his natural hat trick @ 14:35. At center ice, he intercepted a Cardinal pass and skated in on a breakaway.

Extra insurance came from Michael Soraci with an unassisted goal @ 12:26. A little later, Michael, broke away from the AS defense and was bearing down on the Cardinal Goalie. An opponent pulled #6 down and earned a Penalty Shot. He channeled his best TJ Oshie (note Soraci is a close rhyme to Sochi, too) and handled the puck with guile and deception to score Landon’s 5th goal @ 5:20.

In the waning moments, a Cardinal shot was redirected into the far goal corner ending the shutout at 0:55.5
