Varsity Wrestling

From Coach Katz,

The wrestling team had three place winners last weekend at the Magruder “Mad Mats” tournament. With 22 teams, Landon finished in 12th place. All three place winners earned their spots by wrestling well against very tough competition.  Brendon Gallagher placed second after losing in the finals to a returning State Champ and future Navy wrestler.  Ben Goodfriend placed 3rd in a very deep weight class.  Jarett Witzal placed 4th in one of the toughest weights in the tournament. In the process, he knocked off one of the top public school wrestlers in the county.

Danny Rubin, Hapoel Kazrin, next plays on December 23.

Darion Atkins, UVA basketball, returned from his injury to play in the game against Cleveland State. The day before the WaPo ran this great article about Minette’s influence on her son’s return to UVA:

At mom’s urging, Darion Atkins resisted the urge to give up, and the No. 6 Cavaliers are glad

The story gives great insight about both of them, but the best quote is from this Bear of a man:

“It wasn’t really hard to, I guess, swallow my ego, but I just see it as if my team wins, we’ll all be taken care of. . . . I just want to be remembered as the guy who capitalized on his opportunities and played really good defense, tried to rebound really well and was a humble guy and was really patient and waited his turn to try to help his team win as many games as he could.”

In the game, Darion played 16 minutes, had 3 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, blocked a shot and contributed an assist in a 70-54 win.

Joe McDonald, GWU basketball should get our sincere condolences as the Colonials left December 19 for Hawai’i and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamondhead Tournament (12/22-25). Wonder if POTUS will scrimmage while their both in the islands. All of the games are televised.

Chris Hudnut, Colby basketball, is in the holiday break. They go to Babson Park for New Year’s Eve. Chris leads his Mules in scoring (19.9), rebounds @ game (10.), free throws attempted (63) and made (48), blocks (8), minutes @ game (32.9) plus second in assists and steals.

Jake Sofer, RPI, next plays Harvard 12/30.

Max Greenwald, Middlebury, is off until 2015.

Jack Barton, Northern Junior Cyclones, EHL, played in the early season, but broke his arm and is still recovering.

Chris Javens, Odessa Jackalopes, NAHL, beat Rio Valley 4-3, and Chris assisted on the first goal. They next play on 12/26 against the same opponent.

Mike Anderson, Princeton Hockey Club is off until January.

Matt Coster at Cornell, have not received access to the team’s website.

BearSportsNews will be “hibernating” until late December; the information, which would ordinarily be in the next Sunday Edition (12/28/2014), will be included in the first post of 2015. We may have some reports from volunteer reporters.

HAVE A BEARY MERRY HOLIDAY!!
