Landon Lacrosse 6 Archbishop Spalding 4

By a talented correspondent

Given the amount of snow on the ground from Sunday nights storm, we were all delighted that Archbishop Spalding (AS) had been able to clear their ground in time for today’s game. The home team lost to the Bears 6 to 4.

AS were playing with a very effective zone defense that tested Landon in the first quarter. Landon did the bulk of the attack work, however, it was AS who recovered a ground ball that led to a fast break and the first score of the game with 1:43 left in the quarter. Landon came straight back at them and Sean O’Brien fired a shot off the pipe. After regaining control Jack Bolen dodged left and scored the timing goal with just over 5 seconds remaining in the period.

Landon came out fast and created the error which saw AS losing control of the ball and Zac Buller passed astutely to Sam Lynch who scored a smart goal, a minute in to the second quarter. It looked like the coaching staff had the Landon men ready to manage the zone D and the pace of play was noticeably quicker. The ball went around the wheel effectively and the opportunity presented for Rob Atkins to pass to Sam Offutt for a low shot and a 3:1 lead.
The next seven minutes were a tense defensive battle, then with a minute thirty left in the half Max Menkes found Colton Rupp close to the goal, for a 4:1 Landon lead. The pressure had been effective and with just 34 seconds left Bolen evaded his man and scored to make it 5:1 at the half.

The opening ten minutes of the second half was dominated by our long poles; Padalino, Evans, McKenzie, Fowler, Conner and Firstenberg all contributed to a tense but effective period of defensive lax. At the other end, one had to start feeling sorry for the brave AS goalie who took more on the body than into his stick, but he certainly held his ground. Landon eventually got the only goal of the quarter when Austin Petty, moving well to his right sensed an opportunity and found the back of the net for a 6:1 Landon lead.

The last quarter saw AS pick up three goals, however, the die was cast and Landon finished with a comfortable 6:4 win.
