BEARS vs BEARS
In the week’s first Bears vs. Bears game, Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’12) downed Furman (Connor Lynch ’13) 16-9. The game followed Landon’s opening season win over Paul VI.
Penn (Will Laco ’11, Garrett Fellows ’13, Peter Laco ’13) took the short ride to Princeton (Brian Reilly ’09, Jack Strabo C ’10, Justin Murphy ’11, Mark Strabo ’12) for both teams’ Ivy League season opener. The hosting Tigers garnered a 15-12 win. With 27 goals scored in the game, Justin Murphy had a busy day at the X, winning 16 of 31 face-offs and 8 ground balls. D-middie Jack Strabo contributed a goal to the Tigers and Mark Strabo had one ground ball.

Denver (Harrison Archer ’10), faced Ohio State (Luke Howard ’11, Charlie Schnider ’12) in the week’s final Bear vs. Bears game. These teams had some tense battles when they were both in the ECAC, but with conference realignment they have gone their separate ways. The Pioneers earned the 9-5 win. Harrison took one shot and got three ground balls in the win.

Other games:
Bucknell (Sam McDonough C ’10) had an up and down week. The Bison started off the week suffering a 20-4 loss to North Carolina but then rebounded to down Holy Cross 18-8. Sam McDonough fired off one shot in the Holy Cross game.

Colgate (Robby Dunigan ’13) was very consistent, beating Hobart and Boston U. by identical 7-5 scores. Robby saw the field in both games and was credited with a ground ball in the Hobart game.

Cornell (Joe Paoletta ’10, Will Joyce ’10, Marshall Peters ’13) won their Ivy season opener over Yale 11-9. The Bulldogs had won the Ivy League tournament last year, but Cornell sought to reassert their dominance of the league with this game. Joe scored 2 goals for Cornell and Marshall had 2 ground balls.

Delaware (Phil Pena ’13, Taylor Valencia ’13) lost to Hofstra 11-9.

Denver (Harrison Archer ’10) played the week’s first game, picking up a big win over Penn State, 15-11. Harrison took a pair of shots for the Pioneers.

Drexel (Hank Brown ’12) downed Mt. Saint Mary’s 9-6 with Hank picking up an assist in the win.

Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’12) played the Big East season opener against St. John’s. The Hoyas dropped a 15-7 decision to the Johnnies.

Marquette (Cullen Cassidy ’09) had a rough trip to Tobacco Road, falling to Duke 20-9. Cullen had a goal and 4 ground balls for the Golden Eagles. Saturday, Marquette bounced back to beat Detroit 15-10.

Maryland (Kellen Miller ’11) scored the first 7 goals of the game against Villanova, all in the first quarter, then withstood ‘Nova comeback attempt to hold on for the 12-10 win.

Navy (Matt Morrison C ’09, Patrick Keena ’11) dropped two this week, first falling to 14-9 to in-state rival Towson then suffering a tough 13-2 loss to Patriot League foe Lehigh. Patrick had an assist in each game.

Vermont (Coach Ryan Curtis ’96) got back on track, downing Wagner 11-10. The Catamounts have now won 4 games and are off to one of their best starts since Coach Curtis took over the team.

UVA (Mike Rhoads ’13) played the last game of the week, facing Notre Dame in South Bend. The Cavaliers’ basketball team used up all the good karma earlier in the day and the ‘Hoos got doubled up by the Irish 18-9.

This coming week:

Bears vs. Bears:
Colgate (Robby Dunigan ’13) will play in two Bears vs. Bears games this coming week. First, they face Cornell (Joe Paoletta ’10, Will Joyce ’10, Marshall Peters ’13) -also featured in two BvB matches this week-on Tuesday, then travel to Navy (Matt Morrison C ’09, Patrick Keena ’11) on Saturday for a game you can go see.
Penn (Will Laco ’11, Garrett Fellows ’13, Peter Laco ’13) faces Cornell (Joe Paoletta ’10, Will Joyce ’10, Marshall Peters ’13) in a game which will feature 3 Bears on each team. Other games of interest:
Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’12) hosts #2 Loyola on Wednesday in a game you can go see.

Maryland (Kellen Miller ’11) plays North Carolina and then UVA (Mike Rhoads ’13) faces Johns Hopkins on ESPNU this coming Saturday.

D-III
Colby College (Sam Lamson ’12) split two games this week, downing Gordon 13-10, and then falling to perennial NESCAC power Tufts 20-8.
Dickinson (Austin Dodson ’10) found the way to win again, downing Widener 6-5. Austin had 3 shots for the Red Devils.

Gettysburg (Wes Lincoln ’10) had a big loss and a big win this week. Falling first to highly ranked Cabrini 17-5 then rebounding to down Eastern 21-4. Wes scored a goal in the Eastern game and was 4-for-6 on faceoffs.

Hamilton (Sellers Garrett ’12) won one and lost one this week. Hamilton beat Utica 10-9 and the lost to Bowdoin 9-8. Sellers had a total of 9 ground balls in the two games.

Ohio Wesleyan (Tommy Minkler C ’11) beat Hampden Sydney 11-7 on Wednesday the fell to Washington College 10-8. Tommy had 2 goals in both games.
