BEAR.SPORTS,NEWS SUNDAY EDITION 03.02.2014

Darion Atkins and his ‘Hoos beat Syracuse convincingly 75-56 to claim their ACC regular season title. That makes it Bears 2 (Darion and Danny) Orange 0. Harrison Archer is featured in the Denver Post. Jordan Gear is competing in the 1 and 3 meter Pac 12 Diving Finals. Attended the GWU v. GMU basketball game to see Joe McDonald; being able to see his play first hand, rather than read the cold statistics, showed how much really isn’t captured by the scorekeepers. A pass that set up an assist, holding the ball almost at mid-court under heavy pressures while the offense works its options, steals at key momentum points and a steadying influence bringing the ball up court—all are not listed in little boxes, but are the reason why Coach Lonergan relies on #22 so much.

Bear Varsity Lacrosse

Saw the Bears lacrosse team scrimmage McDonogh (Nike/USL #8) on a cold Saturday. Though the Bears’ roster has yet to be cut, here are some quick thoughts:

  • Landon is deep and has lots of speed
  • Though the Bears graduated a lot of defensive talent, the current leading Ds showed size, speed and good stick work
  • Bear pluses— many in the goal and at the X
  • There seemed to be a lot of offensive players, but with pinneys and totally new numbers, there was little way to identify anyone
  • Stick work was surprisingly good this early.

Two more scrimmages (Loyola [N/USL #21]) and Boys Latin [N/USL #1]) and then the 1st game is against a very talented Paul VI on 3/11 there at 5:30pm.

Harrison Archer, Landon ’10, is turning it on in his senior season after some tough injuries. The Denver Post tells his story-http://www.denverpost.com/lacrosse/ci_25244678/du-pioneers-harrison-archer-powered-lacrosse

John Freeman of Williams is at the NESCAC championships, but finding any name in the conference’s non-searchable format is very difficult.
