BEARS vs BEARS

This week featured two Bears vs. Bears games.  Bucknell (Sam McDonough C ’10) hosted Navy (Matt Morrison C ’09, Patrick Keena ’11) in a game that was also the first Patriot League game for each.  The Bison downed the Midshipmen 9-6.  Sam picked up an assist (his first point of his Bucknell career!) and a ground ball.  The second game saw Ohio State (Luke Howard ’11, Charlie Schnider ’12) hosted Marquette (Cullen Cassidy ’09).  Charlie scored a goal for the Buckeyes, contributing to their 11-7 win.  Cullen was 8-for-14 on faceoffs and had one ground ball.

Other games:

  • Penn (Will Laco ’11, Garrett Fellows ’13, Peter Laco ’13) traveled down to Durham to face the defending NCAA Champion Duke Blue Devils.  Last year, the Quakers pulled the upset, but it was not to be this year as Duke won 9-6.
  • Princeton (Brian Reilly ’09, Jack Strabo C ’10, Justin Murphy ’11, Mark Strabo ’12) opened their 2014 campaign against Hofstra.  Down 9-8 to Hofstra at the start of the fourth quarter, the Tigers scored 4 straight goals to put the game away, winning 12-10.  Jack had 4 ground balls in the game, Mark had a caused turnover and Justin Murphy had some critical face-off wins, going 10 for 17 as Princeton’s main FOGO.

  • Cornell (Joe Paoletta ’10, Will Joyce ’10, Marshall Peters ’13) started off their season against Hobart, winning 12-8.  Cornell scored 5 goals in the last two and one-half minutes of the game to break open close contest.  Up until the closing minutes this had been a back-and-forth contest with the scored tied 5 times, no lead greater than 2 goals and 4 lead changes.  Marshall Peters got the start in his first NCAA game and scooped up 3 ground balls.  Joe (#12) had a shot and is featured in this video doing his part for the old hidden ball trick: (double click on the link)

  • Denver (Harrison Archer ’10) picked up a pair of wins this week.  First, Denver downed Marist 15-9.  Harrison was one of three Pioneers with a hat trick, scoring three goals on five shots.  Denver went back-to-back, facing Canisius which the Pioneers beat 14-3.  Harrison picked up another goal in the Canisius game.
  • Maryland (Kellen Miller ’11) scored a huge win, doubling up Syracuse in the Dome, 16-8.
  • Delaware (Phil Pena ’13, Taylor Valencia ’13) downed Mount St. Mary’s 15-5.  Phil saw his first playing action of the season.
  • Drexel (Hank Brown ’12) beat Albany 14-13.
  • Virginia (Michael Rhoads ’13) found the way to win by more than 1, downing Rutgers 19-12.
  • Colgate (Robby Dunigan ’13) fell to Lafayette 8-7.
  • Army downed Furman (Connor Lynch ’13) 12-2.
  • Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’12) fell to Towson 8-7.
  • Vermont (Coach Ryan Curtis ’96) lost to Providence 8-6.

 

This coming week:

  • Bears vs. Bears matches:Maryland (Kellen Miller ’11) host Duke on Sunday in a game you can go see at Byrd Stadium
    • Bucknell (Sam McDonough C ’10) travels to Colgate (Robby Dunigan ’13)
    • Denver (Harrison Archer ’10) travels to Philly to face Penn (Will Laco ’11, Garrett Fellows ’13, Peter Laco’13)
  • Virginia (Michael Rhoads ’13) entertains Syracuse in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN3 on at 7:30 on Saturday.
  • Ohio State (Luke Howard ’11, Charlie Schnider ’12) plays Penn State at 1PM on Saturday in game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports’ ULive website.
  • Drexel (Hank Brown ’12) faces Villanova in a game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports’ ULive website on Tuesday at 7PM.

  • Dickinson (Austin Dodson ’10) picked up a pair of wins in their first week of play, downing Lycoming 17-4 and St Mary’s 13-8.  Austin is back on the field and in the starting lineup for the Red Devils.  He scored his first goal at Dickinson in the St. Mary’s game.  Here’ Austin in action:

AUSTIN DODSON 

  • Ohio Wesleyan (Tommy Minkler C-’11) also won a pair of games this week, beating Mt. St Joe’s 21-2 and Otterbein 10-5.  Tommy is back after missing most of the 2013 season with a knee injury.  Tommy scored 2 goals and dished out 2 assists in the Mt. St. Joe’s game, and then recorded one of each in the Otterbein game.
  • Gettysburg (Wes Lincoln ’10) started their season on Saturday, downing Messiah 12-1.  Wes was 1-for-3 at the faceoff X and gathered up one ground ball.
  • Hamilton (Sellers Garrett ’12) will play their season opener on Saturday when they take on Wesleyan.

  1. Robby Dunigan (Colgate ’17) saw a little actoin in both games so far, no stats yet, hopefully plus stats coming soon…..
