BEARS vs BEARS
The third week of the season had three Bears vs. Bears matches. The week’s first BvB match saw Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’11) face Navy (Matt Morrison-C ’09, Patrick Keena ’11). Georgetown built what appeared to be a comfortable lead with a five goal barrage in the second period, only to see Navy score five of the game’s last six goals in regulation, the last with less than a minute left in the game. The Hoyas pulled out the 9-8 win in overtime. Patrick was credited with one ground ball for the Midshipmen. Next up, Colgate (Robby Dunigan ’13) faced Vermont (Coach Ryan Curtis ’96) in the Catamounts season opener. Colgate came away with the 13-3 win. The third BvB game saw UVA (Mike Rhoads ’13) travel up to Philadelphia to face Drexel (Hank Brown ’12). As has been the case in the ‘Hoos first two games this year, UVA built an lead late in the game, only to see the Dragons rally back to tie. Virginia scored the winning goal with a mere 15 seconds left. Hank Brown got the start for Drexel and chipped in 2 assists. He was also credited with a ground ball and a caused turnover. Other games:
Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’11) opened their 2014 campaign in Wednesday, just a few hours ahead of the snow, and recorded at 10-4 win over Mount Saint Mary’s.
Maryland (Kellen Miller ’11) picked up their second win of the season, down their distant cousins, UMBC, 14-3. Kellen was credited with a ground ball.
Bucknell (Sam McDonough-C ’10) fell to 1-1, dropping a 12-9 decision to Bryant. Sam was credited with a caused turnover for the Bison.
Marquette (Cullen Cassidy ’09) picked up and 11-9 decision over Hofstra. The win was particularly gratifying for the Golden Eagles, as their head coach was a former assistant at Hofstra who, with Cullen, left Hofstra to start Marquette’s men’s lacrosse program. Cullen was 12 for 24 at the faceoff X and recorded 5 ground balls.
Denver (Harrison Archer ’10) faced Duke in a contest between two of last year’s final four participants. Denver dropped a 14-10 decision to the Blue Devils. Delaware (Taylor Valencia ’13, Philip Pena ’13) lost to Fairfield 18-8. Furman (Connor Lynch ’13) fell to the Air Force Academy 15-6.
