Landon Hockey 7 Saint Stephen’s Saint Agnes 4

Over the first seven games (5-1-1), the Bears had developed a sort of confidence– quick passes connected and well-time hip checks arrested an opponent.  The last afternoon in Ft. DuPont was different. Tonight the Bears faced an IAC foe, SSSA, which plays MAPHL A league where the team is undefeated scoring 23 goals against opponents while allowing a mere 3 goals. The Saints team had a longer bench and larger players than in the past. Maybe it was the possibility that the Alexandria team posed a threat or maybe rust remaining from last week, but the crispness of passes and the timing of movement was not as coordinated in the brief pre-game warm up.

The opening minutes of the game lacked fluidity and mistakes were made. Fortunately the red clad (their uniforms were based on the Detroit Red Wings design) visitors were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. At 7:40 Trevor Wolf directed a shot toward the goal and Campbell Blue deflected the puck past the SSSA goalie for the Bears’ 1st score.

With the clock winding down, the referee found one of the Saints’ play worthy of 2:00 minutes time in the penalty parking lot. Twenty five ticks later, Jack Barton’s slap shot was well disguised by an abundance of Bears in front of the opposition goalie, one of who was Brian Jordan and he was able to adjust its direction for Landon’s 2nd goal @ 0:49.4

END OF 1ST PERIOD BEARS 2 SAINTS 0—Bears 16 Shots on Goal; Jack Concannon made 2 saves

The next period followed that trend— good puck movement and crowding of the goalie resulted in the Bears’ 3rd score @ 12:19.  This time a trio participated – Trevor assist, Alex Norwinski assist and Colton Rupp goal. The Saints responded with their first tally at 11:42, but 25 seconds later a Bear trio retaliated — Campbell to Jones Linder to Ben Gilbert who scored @ 11:07. Then Alex qualified for his 2nd A by moving the disc to Trevor who earned his first goal of this game and second point. Again the Bears converted an opportunity during the last 60 seconds and scored their 6th goal @ 0:32.3.

END OF 2nd PERIOD BEARS 6 SAINTS 1—Bears 21 Shots on Goal; Jack Concannon made 5 saves during this fifteen minute period

The Bears had one of their players relegated to a time out in the penalty box and during that 2 minute sanction, the Saints converted a scramble in the crease into their second goal @ 12:58. That activated the Bears to respond and again it was a goal with two assists—goal by Drennan Greene with helpers to Brian and Aeron Beguelin @11:26. The defense (which is not just the pairs of D’s who line up on the blue line, but incorporates all 5 skaters) relaxed a bit, letting up two late goals (one a PP notch).

END OF GAME BEARS 7 SAINTS 4—3RD period totals Bears 12 SoGs and Jack Concannon 10 saves

Next Game 01/29 @ Bears’ Den 4:30pm versus Spaulding (MAPHL record –beat MSJ, ties vs DM and StA and loss to GP)
