Landon Hockey “wins” 2-2 against DeMatha

The above headline steals shamelessly from the famous 1968 Harvard Crimson banner about the Yale v. Harvard game, in which the boys from New Haven were heavily favored over their hated Boston rivals, but the game ended in a tie, 29-29. Tonight the Stags of DeMatha arrived at the Bears’ Den with 25 games under their belt, three tournaments, a 6-3 DMV record and against local competition a 6.3 GF and 2.5 GA averages. They were clearly expecting to beat the 5-1 Bears; the visitors didn’t.

DM got on the scoreboard quickly with goals at 7:38 and 2:48 of the 1st period.  The Bears played a very disciplined game throughout this initial segment; the coaches moved forwards and defenders very often to keep their boys fresh of all 45 minutes. Goalie Sean O’Brien was solid throughout the game, but rebuffed seven Stag shots for this period. The home team mustered 8 SoGs. NOTE: DeMatha did not score over the remaining 30 minutes; 4 below their average GF.

The next 15 minutes saw the Bears gain confidence, though behind they were skating with DM. That positive attitude resulted in getting the puck past the visitors’ goalie. Captain Jack Barton cracked a monstrous slap shot toward the goalie and as the puck approached the goal, Jones Lindner redirected it to the back of the DM net @4:57

Sean stopped 8 opponent shots and the Bears put 7 SoG for this period.

The last section of this game started well as Drennan Greene moved the puck into the danger zone in front of the crease and Colton Rupp was able to lodge the puck in back of the DM nets @ 13.49. The tempo of the game became defensive with both teams limiting their opponents to fewer SoGs than prior periods (Bears 6 Stags 8). All 17 Landon skaters worked hard to deny the DeMatha crew for scoring. Late in the game, Jack  unleashed a slapshot, hit the DM goalie in the helmet and the puck then hit the crossbar, a fraction of an inch from a winning goal.

The game was won by strong forward and D defense, great goalie play and a disciplined offense which converted on opportunities.
