The leading scorer or the player with the most ground balls/caused turnovers is frequently the captain of his team; numbers get noticed. At a place like the United States Naval Academy where leadership is part of the institution’s explicit mission, the players are more conscious of and astute about this quality because their future achievement of career goals depends on this special talent. Navy annually picks a player “who leads by example, displays mental and physical toughness and shows dedication to his teammates”; they picked Matt as a Second Classman for the Lt. Brendan Looney Award. As a First Classman, Matt Morrison was elected Captain by his teammates. An unofficial tally of the numbers of Landon alumni, who have received this honor, has 24 names; the 25th name is an impressive, well deserved addition.

Bears Hoops get a big win against Woodberry Forrest 56-47 with Matt Perlmutter scoring 13 and Keith Simms adding 11 (6 for 6 from the foul line. Riflery lost to Robinson 1065-1132. Varsity swimming and diving team has recorded two wins: 117-77 over The Heights and 93-92 over St. John’s College HS. Hockey is 2-1.

Jordan Marshall ran a 7.47 for Davidson in the JDL College Classic Kick Off 60 meters.

Deion Wellington’s Coastal Carolina indoor track team’s first meet is in January.

Mac Hightower’s Claremont McKenna College track schedule starts in February; they must not have an indoor facility ;-).

Likely there are other Bears who are competing for their colleges in winter sports. If you know of anyone who is playing, please send me ( ) any leads! Thanks.
