Bear Ancient History—Rugby (source Princeton Alumni Weekly)

”We all remember watching Robby (to most Landon students a/k/a MISTER Bordley) gain All-Ivy honors in lacrosse and football. Word now comes that Robby was one of 10 inducted into the US Rugby Hall of Fame….Robby was honored as the first man to captain the modern US Rugby “Eagles,” first against Australia and then France, in 1976. It wasn’t until Thanksgiving after football season of senior year that Robby gave the game a try at the prestigious Washington Sevens Championships, but he was hooked! He played for Princeton at various alumni matches and played for the Washington Rugby Football Club from 1970—85.

In his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, as reported by Tom Pirelli ’69, Rob was at his self-effacing best. He told a large gathering before a US—Ireland match: “In 1976, head coach Dennis Storer asked me to captain the team. I was puzzled as I was an Ivy Leaguer and the rest of the team wanted all Californians to make up the squad. At the dinner with the Australians the night before the first-ever International, many of the Californians made long speeches. When they concluded, Dennis said I had something to say. So I went to the podium and said, ‘I hope these guys play as well as they talk . . .’ and sat down. As I returned to my table, Dennis said, ‘That is why I made you captain.’” Congrats, Robby,

On the rugby pitch on 10/5/13, Jack Sears chipped in 5 points on two kicks, a conversion and a penalty, in a 13-10 loss to U. Maine Orono.
