Landon 7 DeMatha 2

The Stags have a proud lacrosse tradition. Most probably, you are aware of at least two prominent DeMatha lax alums:

Paul Rabil, #99 in advertisements for all sorts of lacrosse gear and

and

the USNA lacrosse legend \Navy Seal hero, Brendan Looney (his jersey number #40 is assigned by team vote to the Middie who best represents Brendan’s spirit; this year being worn by Bear Matt Morrison!)

The Hyattsville WCAC athletic citadel’s lacrosse team had just won and lost in Overtime– a 7-6 win over St. Mary’s Ryken and a 10-9 loss to Paul VI.  They have a bunch of college recruits including one to the Dolphins of Jacksonville and 4 to USNA (including their FOGO).

On a cold and rainy afternoon, Robby Dunigan warmed up the scoreboard when he blasted by the DM defense and nailed a goal @ 11:16. The visitors responded at 11:04. Bear Garrett Fellows fed Sam Lynch who buried his shot @ 9:38. As the first period clock expired, the Stags equaled the score (0:43).

END OF 1ST Q BEARS 2 STAGS 2

That marked the end of the DM scoring. That shut out was attributable to (a) Jarrett Witzal, who had his way at the X, winning 10 out of 14 face-offs and (b) the smothering defense which starred Hunter Sells (11 saves) plus his band of long poles mentioned frequently. Today he was ably protected by Will Buckingham, Paul Padalino and Kolby Williams, among others.

Sean O’Brien began a string of four scores in which he contributed a G or an A. First #1 passed from behind to Jack Bolen, who stepped down and fired a bounce shot @9:08. Taylor Valencia made Sean the scorer with a great pass @ 3:44.

HALFTIME SCORE BEARS 4 STAGS 2

The Sean Show continued @ 8:10, here he fed Colton Rupp for the Bears’ 5th goal. #4 showed his gratitude by returning the favor by passing to #1 for the last goal in the O’Brien riff @ 5:16. Taylor Valencia completed the Bears’ scoring @ 0:51unassisted.

END OF 3RD Q BEARS 7 STAGS 2

The last twelve minutes were punctuated by heavier rain and as the sun receded, it grew colder. The home team displayed more depth adding Mike Rallo, Leo Falcone, Riley Falcone, Kyle Hartman, Max Menkes and Rob Adkins to the O end of the field. Their endeavors were limited by the weather and they were matched against the DM first liners. The Stags realized that they had not scored for 36 minutes and their frustration grew fruitlessly.
