Landon Lacrosse 12 Coronado 7

Alex Cade’s Coronado Islanders is one of California’s premier programs and it is always interesting to match this alumnus’ boys against the Bears. The Bare-Foot Bear Alum coached his charges to stay close and even hold a lead, but ultimately, the home team broke away for a 12-7 victory.

Today, Coach Bordley inserted a number of players who will be primary contributors next year and beyond. The athletes from California are great tests for the young Bears and after this challenge, the Landon underclassman will have gained some confidence.

Woody Axelson got the home team started when he drove from behind, forcing the Islanders’ D to react and causing a gap in their coverage. Into that hole darted Zach Buller who caught the pass from #22 and quick-sticked (or is it “stuck”) it into the visitors goal @ 9:40. The Islanders netted a goal with 0:03 left in the first period.

END OF 1ST Q BEARS 1 ISLANDERS 1

The visitors used the momentum from their initial score to plunk a second 35 seconds into the next period. That attack motivated the Bears and the scoreboard rolled from one Bear goal to seven within 5 minutes—

  • Sean O’Brien unassisted coming from behind @ 8:48
  • Jack Bolen unassisted on a midfield sweep  @ 8:12
  • Robby Dunigan on EMO passes to Peter Laco @ 6:24
  • Consecutive goals by Austin Petty @6:46 and 5:35 and
  • Zach returns the favor of the game’s first goal by passing to Woody, the guy who got the A then and # 22 now buried it @ 3:20

Part of the run was another good performance at the X by Jason Murphy and a stingy defense which saw the usual long poles plus a lot of playing time for three sport athlete Kolby Williams.

HALFTIME BEARS 7 ISLANDERS 2

Playing from behind, Robby fed Zach with a sweet pass @ 9:58. The Islanders responded with two goals, first at 7:21 and the second at 1:55. After carrying the ball on a clear into the Bears O zone, Marshall Peters made a case for playing with a short stick again (actually in the 4th Q he did carry the LT 42” stick) by putting the ball in the upper corner of the Islander goal @ 1:28

END OF 3RD Q BEARS 9 ISLANDERS 4

Peter Laco started the period with a nice feed to Rob Adkins who scored @9:58. The Islanders responded with a goal at 9:54. The Bears got two consecutive scores—Sam Gansler fired an EMO goal @ 7:57 and then #27 fed classmate Colton Rupp @ 6:55 and 1:55 for the 11th and 12th goals respectively. With a fair amount of sloppy play, the visitors tallied two, one at 4:07 and the next at 2:18.
