Bears vs. Bears

On Tuesday, the week started with #15 Bucknell (Sam McDonough ’10) traveling up to Ithaca to face undefeated #2 Cornell (Joe Paoletta ’10, Will Joyce ’10).  The Bison pulled off the big upset, downing Cornell 9-8.  Sam McDonough was credited with a ground ball.

Cornell (Joe Paoletta ’10, Will Joyce ’10) bounced back in the second BvB game of the week, as the Big Red picked up an important Ivy League win over Penn (Will Laco ’11). Will had a ground ball for the Quakers.

Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’11) faced Duke (Josh Offit ’09) in the week’s third BvB tilt.  The Blue Devils won 19-7 with Josh scoring one goal and dishing out 3 assists.

Other Games This Week

  • Princeton (Brian Reilly ’09, Jack Strabo ’10, Justin Murphy ’11, Mark Strabo ’12) picked up a key win over Yale.  Justin Murphy had yet another strong game at the X, winning 13 of 22 faceoffs against λale’s faceoff ace who had won two-thirds of his matches leading up to Friday’s contest.   Justin got player of the game honors for his efforts.  Odd bits from the game include ESPNU announcer (and Princeton alum) Ryan Boyle comparing Jack Strabo to Leon Lett.
  • Bucknell (Sam McDonough ’10) continued their winning ways on Saturday, downing Albany 18-12.  Sam had 3 ground balls for the Bison.
  • Navy (Matt Morrison ’09, Patrick Keena ’11) faced Colgate in the first game of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium.  Navy fell, 11-3.  Patrick Keena scored a goal by picking up a rebound of his own shot and then powering through defensive pressure to score.  You can see the play at the 39:40 mark of the game replay which can be seen on WatchESPN.
  • Maryland (Kellen Miller ’11) suffered their first loss of the season as their comeback against North Carolina came up short.  Now there are no undefeated teams in D-I.
  • Ohio State (Luke Howard ’11, Charlie Schneider ’12) dropped a 9-4 decision to Notre Dame on Wednesday, but bounced back on Saturday to down Bellarmine 9-7.  Charlie took two shots in the Notre Dame game and had one shot and one ground ball against Bellarmine.
  • Drexel (Hank Brown ’12) got a big win over #7 ranked Hofstra, 8-7 in triple overtime.  Hank put a shot on goal, but couldn’t convert.
  • Georgetown (Alex Joyce ’12) fell to defending NCAA Champs Loyola 13-8.
  • Hobart (David Chakola ’09) lost to Fairfield 13-8.
  • The Vermont Catamounts (Coach Ryan Curtis ’96) beat Sacred Heart 8-7, picking up their second consecutive win.

This week marked the halfway point in the D-I regular season schedule.  With the week’s losses by Cornell and Maryland there are no undefeated teams left, but there are 6 teams with only one loss.  Upsets seem to come one after the other, but we may need to wait until May to see what really constitutes an upset this year.  Most conferences have only played one or two games and tournaments are a month away, so filling in your brackets now may be a fool’s errand.
