Archbishop Spalding Hockey 5 Landon 4

The Bears are young; tonight’s roster includes 9 underclassmen and 7 seniors/juniors. The Baby Bears learned a lot in tonight’s 5-4 loss to MAPHL’s #1 team.

The visitors played 20 minutes of textbook hockey. The positioning and passing looked like they were drawn up on Coach Gammill’s white board. It seemed as though the Bears won every 1 v.1 battle during the period. Though they put 14 shots on the Cavaliers’ goalie; the Landon had no goals for the 1st 15 minutes. Fortunately the home team was unable to put any shots behind Sam Kroll for the period.

That trend continued for the initial ten minutes of the 2nd period. Then within a two minute segment a total of four goals were deposited by the two teams. Jacob Ruttenberg took a shot from his point on the blue line, the AS goalie let it rebound and Jones Lindner scored from close range at 4:26. Unfortunately, the home team responded with a tally 33 seconds later.

The scorekeeper was barely able to enter a +1 for AS when Baby Bears JunMo Kim and Michael Soraci broke into the AS D zone with a 2 on 1 break; #23 drove to the net and as the Cavaliers’ goalie squared against him, JunMo slid the puck to his linemate #22 who slammed it into the opposing goal, B2 C1 @3:23

This time it took AS a little more than a minute to respond. The Cavalier caused a Bear turnover in the visitors’ D zone, gathered the puck and blasted the equalizing goal @ 2:27.

It looked as though the home team was going to gain an advantage, when one of the AS forwards blasted a shot but Sam grabbed the puck with seconds remaining

END OF 2ND PERIOD       BEARS 2 CAVALIERS 2 (B Shots on Goal 32 C SoG 21 for the 2 periods)

A good omen started the last period. Alex Norwinski got possession of the puck, dangled two AS players and lined up a shot from a stride within the blue line. His wrist shot caught the lower right hand corner of the goal @ 14:32 B3 C2

Again the home team responded not once but twice scoring at 14:13 and 12:21 — C4 B3.

The game took a nine minute defensive tone with neither team beating the opposing net minder. The AS captain was called for a charge and the Bears were able to take advantage of their power play—Jones scoring on an assist from Jack Sears @ 3:38.

Both teams skated hard for the remaining time, each with unsuccessful attacks of the opponent’s goal.

With 0:46 remaining in what should have been a tie, the home team scored.
