Landon Hockey 5 DeMatha 3

The Stags Hockey website touts that they have won 10 state championships, but the DeMatha team was lost in the MAPHL finals for the last two years to the Bears. If very informal records are right, The Hyattsville school, known for their winning in all sports, has lost to the Bears at least 4 straight times; after tonight’s visit to their home ice (Laurel Ice Gardens) make that FIVE CONSECUTIVE LOSSES TO LANDON, tonight’s a devastating 5-3 blow–the visitors were down 2-0, but scored 5 of the next 6 goals!

The rink was heavily populated by Stag and Bear students. The home team came out working at a high rate and scored 0:20 into the 1st period. Consistent with DM’s physical play, soon thereafter a home team player hit a Bear from behind drawing an ejection, putting his teammates down for 5 minutes and sending a Landon skater for medical help. Less than a minute later, another Stag player was whistled for cross-checking.

Perhaps it was the DM aggressive play, the “hangover” from the last game in which the Bears were able to make plays then that were spectacular dekes but that were imprudent against a team like tonight’s opponents, and/or suffered from the rust of seven days since the last game? Whatever it was, the young Bears (9 Freshmen and Sophomores) did not play their best. The resulting 2 man advantage and remainder of the 5 minute penalty was for naught.

The Stags added to their lead with a 2nd goal at 8:44. The Bears were down 2-0 but showed resiliency when Assistant Captain Will Buckingham cranked a massive slap shot from the point and as the puck approached the DM net, Junmo Kim, redirected it for a goal 4:58.

END OF 1ST PERIOD STAGS 2 BEARS 2; DM shots on goal 14, L SoGs 7 (very unofficial) Penalty Minutes DM 9, L 6

The 2nd period was a lot less eventful with fewer penalties (DM 6, L 2)  and a more balanced shot tally (both teams put 10 SoGs). The Stags put another puck in the Bear goal at 5:20 on a rebound, but the Bears brought the margin back to -1 with a Chris Javens goal at 2:27 which crossed the goal line with 14 seconds remaining on a DM penalty. Clearly the Baby Bears had gained confidence and were playing well.

The tone and tempo of the last stanza was quickly set (70 seconds off the clock) when Chris connected with Junmo to tie the game 3-3. The Stags drew a penalty but killed the Bears’ Power Play, and then the Bears reciprocated the favor of an advantage, with no conversion for the home team. Finally, the DM captain was called for a slash, but here the Landon team was successful with the added skater. Jack Barton shot and Junmo scored his hat trick on a rebound at 1:57, Bears 4 Stags 3.

There was a stoppage of play at 1:27 and the DM coach called a time out, set up a play, pulled his goalie and had 6 offensive skaters against the Bears 5 defenders (Graham Shue, Jack Barton, Will, Chris and John Wellington [sometime in the minutes preceding to this last 87 seconds, John held the puck against the boards against at least three opponents to eat up valuable time desperately needed by the Stags]). During what seemed like an eternity of almost a minute and a half, Landon Goalie Sam Kroll and his buddies held off the extremely aggressive Stags.

The home team was staggered when the Bears carried the puck out of the D zone, moved the puck up and John fed Will for a crushing empty net goal at 0:23.1. At the ensuing face off, Graham won the puck and his teammates skated the last few seconds being serenaded by the Bear fans in the stand with a stirring rendition of Landon Forever.

FINAL SCORE BEARS 5 STAGS 3; final saves Kroll 37 DM 17
