BEAR BITES

As graduation approaches and the WaPo takes its time for its All Met teams, some more news:

COACHES

The end of year honors frequently focus on the students, but because Landon holds to the teacher/coach/mentor model, it is not surprising that Bear teachers are being recognized:

« Randy Bednar, the baseball coach and 4th grade teacher, was awarded the prestigious 2011-2012 Shirley J. Lowrie “Thank You For Teaching” Award. Ms. Lowrie was a very accomplished educator and she endowed a fund to recognize exceptional professionals. In addition, Mr. Bednar was named William F. Banks Family Chair for Excellence in Teaching, a three-year appointment.

« David Holm, AD and History Teacher, was named the linebackers coach for the U-15 National Team. He will also coach the U-19 National team throughout try-outs. It’s pretty impressive that a Bear assistant football coach is considered by his peers to be talented enough to help develop some of the best athletes in the country. Maybe that explains why opposing QBs and RBs always had an eye out for the Landon LBs.

«     Adam Atwell, Chair of the US Math Department, was named by the Gazette the Coach of the year for Montgomery County. That publication cited Mr. Atwell for leading “a team of mostly freshmen and sophomores to season-ending Interstate Athletic Conference tournament title for team’s first championship since 2004.” Landon has a tradition of exceptional tennis coaches (i.e. Mr. Jacoby) and this award is a sign of good Bear tennis in the future. See the next section for more about Landon’s court presence for the next few years.
