BEAR BITES

At the end of the school year, there are a number of accolades and other news that should be included in these notes.

Tennis Team IAC Co Champions

Landon captured first place in the I.A.C. Ben Johns Tennis Tournament, leading the team to a share of the I.A.C. title, its first since 2004. Co-captains Michael Harris ’12 and Richard Huber ’12, along with Head Coach Adam Atwell, accepted the Ben Johns plaque on behalf of the championship Bears team.

The final tournament results were:

Landon                                36 points
Bullis                                   32 points
St. Albans                            32 points
Episcopal High School          21 points
Georgetown Prep                 20 points
St. Stephens & St. Agnes      7 points

Landon players reached the finals in all seven flights. Highlights included a championship win at number two doubles by two freshmen, Deacon Brew ’15 and Seth McNair ’15. Sophomore Alexander Reinke ’14, fifth seed at number one singles, upset both the fourth seed and the first seed before succumbing in the finals to the third-seeded Bullis player.

Atwell said, “We finished third in the regular season, after losing 3-4 to both St. Albans and Bullis. Winning the tournament and finishing with a share of the title was really redemptive.”

More Lacrosse Honors

Mark Strabo’12 was named to the Academic All American team. According to the Landon website, Mark is the third Bear to attain such distinction and the prior winners attended the same college as Mark will enter this Fall.

All IAC 1st team members, according to DCSportsFan.com :

          Hank Brown, Landon, Midfield, Sr.

          Peter Laco, Landon,  Mid/Attack, Jr.

          Mark Strabo, Landon, Defense, Sr.

          Alex Joyce, Landon, Goalie, Sr.

          Charlie Schnider, Landon, Midfield, Sr.

The IAC team is composed of 6 attackmen, 6 midfielders, 4 defensemen, 2 Goalies and 1 LSM.

The WaPo All Met team should be released soon.

Landon Retains the IAC Founders Cup

One of the most coveted symbols of all around IAC conference athletic achievement was retained by the Bears for the 2012 academic year. Having taken it away from RP last year and having bested the little Hoyas this year by 1.5 points, it is clear that it is not just the championship teams (hockey, tennis, lacrosse and golf) but the depth of talent provided by Bear competitors in every sport.

Having attended an inordinate number of these events,  BSN endorses the comment of Landon AD David Holm:

“Winning the Founder’s Cup is a tribute to our student-athletes, coaches and the Landon community. This award, along with the outstanding sportsmanship exhibited by our students and coaches this year, should make us all very proud to be Landon Bears.”

It is also notable that the Bears in the stands should also be recognized for their sportsmanship; the numbers of fans in attendance, the volume of their cheers, the creativity/coordination of their costumes and their support for every team (at wins and especially the occasional loss, home and away) were EXEMPLARY!!! They deserve the Founders Fan Cup.
