LANDON LACROSSE 10 GOOD COUNSEL 6 [400th BSN post]

The Bears faced a team from Good Counsel, a school better known for its football (15 players on WaPo recruit watch—6 ACC, 3 SEC, 3 BIG TEN, 1 PAC 10, 1 CONF USA, 1 DIV III), but this Falcon lacrosse team was not without credentials—2011 WCAC semifinalists, the returning Montgomery Gazette Coach of the Year (Coach Durkin) and at least three Division I recruits—plus they came to Bordley Stadium on a two game winning streak. Some of that potential showed early (scoring the 1st goal), but the home team’s depth became the measure of victory in this 80°+ weather—10-4.

The Falcons’ Luke Poulos (#23 headed to Army) got his team on the scoreboard at 7:15. The Bears put a lot of pressure on the GC goalie Ty Wedekind, peppering him with many shots in the initial twelve minutes and he made some unconscious, good saves. Garrett Fellows got a precise cross crease pass from Sean O’Brien and #8 buried it at 1:53. In the last few seconds of this period, Peter Laco found Jack Falk at 0:07.7 to give the Bears a lead.

END OF 1ST Q BEARS 2 – FALCONS 1

Depth started to rule now with Taylor Valencia scored on a deft pass from Charlie Schnider at 9:37. The next faceoff resulted in Peter Laco gaining possession of the ball one of the benefits of being the GB vacuum!) and he slammed the ball past the GC goalie at 9:00. The fifth goal was a thing of beauty, or a dreaded teaching moment for the player with Coach Bordley. It began somewhat inauspiciously as attackman Matt Potolicchio passed it out to Philip Pena. By the time that the future Blue Hen was ready/able to shoot, he no longer had an angle. The sharpshooter took a much frowned upon around-the-back shot; fortunately the ball found net at 6:53.Soon thereafter, the referees decided that the Bears had fouled a Falcon and gave them an EMO opportunity; the result was that Division I recruit Graham Dabbs (#16) scored. Charlie added to his reputation as a Patrick Kenna disciple and fed Peter for his second goal, at 2:41.Future Blue Jay Sam Lynch showed his alley dodge move and scored at 1:51. The Falcons #10 Lucas Arnsberger (the GC website lists the 2011 #s and the WaPo site has none; so this and other identifications are “educated” guesses) found the net at 0:01.8

HALFTIME BEARS 7 – FALCONS 3

The home team’s 8th goal came from future Dragon Hank Brown. Future Friar of Providence Nolan Fillet scored for the Falcons at 6:42 on an EMO play and off a pass from #29 (not on any of the GC sources). Three minutes later (3:49) the future Cadet scored for the Falcons on an unassisted basis.

END OF 3rd Q BEARS 8  – FALCONS 5

The visitors added a third goal to their streak (Poulus unassisted at 9:23). The play continued fairly roughly (a slash on Joyce after the ball moved up the field, away from the referees’ view and a ridiculous crosscheck through Hank’s throat), but particularly that last uncalled foul may have adjusted the vision of the zebras. Soon thereafter, the GC team was called for a penalty and the Bears’ EMO was successful—Charlie increased his feeder stature with a wicked feed (his 3rd of the game) to Matt. who scored at 10:00. Another man advantage resulted in a pass from Matt to Peter for his hat trick goal at 3:03.
