Bear Bites

One of the real pleasures of being a student of the Landon boys is observing their excellence in multiple dimensions. Mike Anderson ’12 has been the subject of several posts chronicling his achievements on the ice, in the science laboratories and in art galleries. It is not entirely surprising that Mike has received another accolade and at this time of year, one might presume that it was another hockey recognition. WRONG!!!

National Winners for the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards included Mike’s “Erosion” painting as a Gold Medal winner and his work “Pink Noise” for a Silver Medal. In addition to the medals, Mike and Chair of the Studio Arts, Walt Bartman (also coach of the very successful water polo team) will travel to NYC on the Award’s travel expenses to bask in the adulation of the knowledgeable art critics at a ceremony.

Further to this singular pleasure, this same august body found five other Landon boys to merit other awards:

Jack Bolen ’14, Honorable Mention in Painting
Jackson Howard ’13, Honorable Mention in Painting.
Shehrose Mian ’12, Honorable Mention in Photography
Jason Murphy ’13, a Gold Key award in Painting
Matthew Schick ’14, Gold Key award in Painting

Those, who frequently read the posts that are written here, may recognize these names from sports—varsity football, wrestling and lacrosse and junior varsity lacrosse players (maybe more and I apologize if I missed the other accomplishments) are among this bunch of stellar artists!

Go Bears!!!
