Lots of coverage on Landon coaches and athletes:

Soccer Head Coach is Finalist for Award

Landon School Varsity Soccer Head Coach Bill Reed has been named a finalist for the 2012 National Double-Goal Coach Award sponsored by the Positive Coaching Alliance.  The Double-Goal Coach Award honors coaches who purse “both wins and the even more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports.”

Athletic Director David Holm says, “It’s a terrific honor, and we’re really happy that Bill has received it. He really puts the boys first and exemplifies the teacher-coach model that is so important at Landon.”

The PCA is a national nonprofit organization committed to providing all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience, supporting them to perform better on and off the field.

Reed, who is chairman of Landon’s History Department, is one of 50 semifinalists. Twenty finalists will be announced in mid-February.

Senior exhibits leadership, scoring prowess

Joe McDonald ’12, a guard on the varsity basketball team, is featured in a Montgomery Gazette article, “Landon senior helps lead Bears with appetizing attitude.” The article recalls a conversation between McDonald and Coach Andy Luther, which took place after McDonald was not named to the all-I.A.C. Team after his freshman year.

“He goes, ‘Coach, coach, stop. I don’t care about any of that stuff. I don’t worry about that stuff. All I care about is that we won,” Luther said in the article. “I said, ‘That’s why you’re a winner, and that’s why you’re going to be a winner your entire career.’”
