This is a big week for the Bears; for they play RP on Friday away and the outcome of that match will have impact on both the IAC and MAPHL tournaments. To play the Maryland Public School 2011 State Championship at the beginning of the week might hurt or help their game later in the week. Further, Landon had to respond to their first loss in 39 games; could the home team regain their stride or was there a loss of confidence after their trip to Pennsylvania?

The visiting Bulldogs (missing two of their top players to injuries) played with a lot of energy in the 1st period and for almost 12 minutes, the Blue/Green sweaters kept the Bears off of the scoreboard. At 4:14 WC went on a powerplay and unfortunately for the visitors, the extra room on the ice allowed the aggressively forechecking  Bears to cause a turnover, Graham Shue moved the puck up to Captain Matt Potolicchio, who buried the puck for a shorthanded goal @ 3:22. L1 WC 0

True to Landon’s offensive profile and attributable to having superior depth (4 sets of forwards and 3 pairs of D), the 2nd period was dominated by the home team. Three consecutive goals were scored by the Bears:

          Goal                     Assist(s)                                 Time

          Porter                  Wellington                              12:51

          Buckingham       Porter, Wellington                  6:28

          Meike, Connor    Barton                                     4:15

It was not as though the Bulldogs had conceded the match; it was a matter of the Landon’s depth, speed and skill established a difference.

END of 2ND PERIOD BEARS 4 BULLDOGS 0; SOGs (official) L 10 WC 2 [2ND Period]

The last 15 minutes were not as eventful. Landon was able to kill a 5 on 3 WC powerplay in part because the visitors were ruled to have hooked a Bear forward reducing the advantage to 4 on 3 for about a minute. The SOGs for this test were 1 for the Bears and 4 for the Bulldogs. Soon thereafter, Matt Potolicchio fed Nick Malone the Bears’ 5th goal.

END of 3rd PERIOD BEARS 5; SOGs (official) L 28 WC 16 [FULL GAME]

THAT’S A BEAR AWARD—This game was won because of depth; no one more typifies the Bears’ wealth of talent than the team’s junior forward. He brings size to the crease and an imposing figure to forechecking. He follows in the tradition of his older, but less physically brother, but adds energy and fearless checking. Today #8 had two assists, but the constant movement and energy of JOHN WELLINGTON merited his recognition as the TABA tonight.

FRIDAY BEARS vs RP @ Cabin John at 6:15PM

No eyewitness report, but the Bears Hoops team are reported as having lost to StA (A), 70-61; they play @ SSSA on Friday at 7:30pm.
